We were so dedicated

The Arts House

A few months ago, there was a surprise, interacting with someone new-ish who also knew of you and shared a memory of you. Also interestingly, it’s unclear if he knows you’re gone. True, he didn’t remember your last name, but he knew exactly what you looked like. It is nevertheless such a bittersweet way to cherish another interaction that otherwise might have been lost.

Remember how we ended up in the Arts House at Harnwell? Funny but I almost did forget. This fellow arts house floor mate commented how he and his roommates (and others on the floor) always asked why these two girls (they also didn’t even realize we had two other roommates since they never showed up to anything), the tall redhead and the short Asian girl, never performed at the arts house events. Instead, they were always there ”arranging chairs and stacking napkins”. The other arts house floor mates had to practice and perform their various musical talents. Apparently, others speculated behind our backs what the heck we were doing in the prized arts house floor, because to get in, you had to audition and showcase your “Arts” talents and commit to recitals throughout the year, among a handful of other “artsy” things that qualified one to be live on the Arts House floor.

Oh the laughs we would have had and had in the past. It is no mystery that you and I lacked performance worthy musical talents. Although, I did try to convince you once that we could do a spoof lip sync of Loathing, since we were roommates and best friends, which would have fit right along the theme of the song. Anyways, the story of how we got the suite in the Arts House floor…. we actually applied to the East Asia House floor (which was one floor below). Personally, I felt we had an excellent case for it — I was after all an East Asia focused International Relations major and Asian American minor while you forayed into South Asia history and took Hindu religion courses. Alas, East Asia House was too popular and we didn’t get in, but the RA did appreciate our essay applications and no doubt felt sympathetic to our attempt, coming from the Quad, so she asked if we minded the Arts House floor since it was the same floor plan, and apparently they had an open suite. We took it immediately; getting into a high rise was the priority!

Therefore, we landed ourselves in the Arts House for the next 3 years, without an ounce of artistic talent. 1307 then became a sanctuary of many, many emotional turmoils and ridiculous adventures.
